Rennes-le-Château
This ancient village renown throughout the world receives tens of thousands of visitors each year due to it being the centery of many conspiracy theories.
One of these theories involves the Abbe Sauniere, who is believed to have discovered a buried treasure during the 19th century. With these funds, Sauniere was able to restore a church that was built and dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalen.
The quote "Terribilis est locus locus site" from Genesis ("This place is terrifying"), is the first greeting visitors receive upon entering the church.
It is also home to a statue of the Devil holding up the holy water stoup. The Devil's original head was stolen in 1996, never to be recovered.
It is believed that many clues are strewn among the church, with the intention of leading people to the lcoation of the remainder of the fabled treasure.
Puivert
The Chateau de Puivert is a Cathar castle believed to have been built in the 13th century. The first mention of it dates back to 1170.
It is also famous for having been featured in the demonic thriller "The Ninth Gate", featuring Johnny Depp.
Carcassonne
Added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997, this ancient medieval fortress has been occupied since the Neolithic.
Its strategic importance was quickly recognized by the Romans, who occupied the hilltop until the demise of the Western European Empire. It was later taken over by the Visigoths, who found the city during the Vth Century.
